CONCERNING FOOD SACRIFICED TO IDOLS PART II: KEEPING FROM STUMBLING A BROTHER 1 CORINTHIANS 8:7-13
Because there is one God and one Lord Jesus Christ, we must never cause our brother to stumble in idolatry. Weak consciences can be defiled (7) Our consciences should be informed by knowledge (7a) Our consciences are informed by experience (7b) Our liberty can become a stumbling-block to weak consciences (8-12) Food in itself is not an issue (8) But, food offered to idols IS an issue (9-10) Our “knowledge” can be the means by which a person is destroyed (11) Wounding a weak conscience is sinning against Christ (12) We must take radical measures to avoid causing a brother to stumble (13) We must never even appear to be idolatrous (13) We must balance “knowledge” with “love” (1)
