Disunity, discord, conflict and division will destroy the church if left unchecked. Our Saviour gave His life for the sake of oneness in the church. He died to bring unity -- with His children and among His children.
Although Paul's main reason for writing to the Philippians was not to address specific sin issues, this section of the letter seems to indicate that there existed a definite problem with unity and some level of discord. But, while there may not have been all out dissension in the church, still there was clearly an issue with disunity.
Bible commentator William Barclay wrote: 'The one danger which threatened the Philippian church was that of disunity. There is a sense in which that is the danger of every healthy church.' Fracturing the church is one of Satan's major objectives and he accompishes his task through a sin condition he shares in common with humanity -- PRIDE.
Sin separates. Conflict divides. Pride is the source; humility the only cure. Pride is the slow poisin of the human spirit. It slowly kills the tender growth of all Christian virtues like a lethal herbicide.
Today, we examine the intensely practical, but subtle manifestations of pride in the human condition. Join us if you dare, but be prepared to be taken to the 'wood shed.'
