How do I listen to God's word so that it transforms me? You can be hearing but not listening. Also, you can listen to people speaking about God's word, yet they are not saying what God is saying. Listening to a guy who quotes the text is not necessarily hearing God's word. Remember, Satan and his demons also preach the Bible. Careful listening requires accurate teaching that helps you to understand. Good preaching is not defined by the volume and passion of the preacher. Careful listening requires that you ask God to help you understand. Read and think about the text before hearing the sermon. Fight to concentrate during preaching. Take notes during preaching and think about it during the week, discussing it with other people. Careful listening requires deliberate acceptance of what the Bible is teaching. It involves being willing to change, even if it requires you to do things that don't want to do. It requires a commitment to hang on to what you have learned. Imagine a mechanic who goes to lectures for 5 years to learn how to repair cars, but you then ask him to help you repair your car, but he says he has no idea how to fix a car. That is what people are like, most often, in the church. Rather, a good listener actually does what God's word says. It requires you to continually cultivate an appreciation for the sheer privilege of hearing the word of God. Sadly, not everyone who listens to the word of God cares about the secrets and mind of God. Not everyone who listens hears. Some who have heard, will lose everything. Others will gain everything.
