For some it is almost impossible to imagine, but is it possible that we have left Christ out of Christianity? Is the faith and practice of American Christians today more American than Christian? For some people, like author Michael Horton, it is not only possible to imagine but it is a trend that needs to be addressed.
In his new book "Christless Christianity: The Alternative Gospel of the American Church", Horton argues that while churches invoke the name of Christ; too often Christ and the Christ-centered gospel are pushed aside. The result is a message and a faith that are, in Horton's words, "trivial, sentimental, affirming and irrelevant."
According to Dr. Horton, it is this alternative "gospel," a message of moralism, personal comfort, self-help, self-improvement and individualistic religion that trivializes God, making him a means to our selfish ends. Though mostly a critique, Horton's book does point to the solution: a return to the unadulterated gospel of salvation.
My guest on the "Knowing The Truth" radio program today, will be Dr. Michael Horton - the host of the White Horse Inn radio broadcast, Professor of Apologetics and Theology at Westminster Seminary California and editor-in-chief of Modern Reformation magazine. |
