There are those who teach that it is nonsense for a Christian to pray 'forgive us our sins'. One of two errors is usually behind this mistaken teaching. On the one hand is the error of human perfection teachings such as those that come down through John Wesley or the Keswick spirituality movement. If a person believes that they no longer sin, then it makes no sense to pray and ask for forgiveness. On the other hand is the error of believing that because the Christian is positionally righteous and fully justified in Christ that asking for forgiveness is asking for what we already possess and so a waste of prayer.
Yet Jesus taught the Lord's Prayer for children of God (Our Father) and intends that we should make use of it regularly. This sermon seeks to sort out the reasoning for this by taking a closer look at justification and sanctification.
