In spite of all the burdens and disappointments of being a pastor, the reward will far outweigh the investment. God is faithful and just in all his work; He would not call a man to a life of sacrifice and suffering for the sake of others and not reward him for his faithful labor. But the cross always comes before the crown, and the work of God is sowing and watering and waiting for the fruit to appear. That takes time and patience. Most of the reward will be realized in eternity, but God drops handfuls of purpose along the journey sufficient to cheer and strengthen his heart until then.
