We live in a world of oaths, vows, and covenants—some of them being lawful while others being unlawful. You would likely not have a job if there was not some form of a covenant or contract that bound you and your employer to certain duties. You live in a nation that has engaged in various treaties or covenants with other nations for commerce and for peace. If you are married, you entered into a covenant wherein you bound yourself before God to be faithful to your husband or wife till death do you part. If you have been baptized within a Christian Church, you are formally bound by covenant to the Lord to fight against the world, the flesh, and the devil all the days of your life. Even salvation through Jesus Christ is based upon a covenant. Dear ones, you might as well deny the air all around you as to deny the covenants that are all around you. God is unavoidable and undeniable, and so are the many covenants that define us as human beings, as families, as nations, as churches, and as Christians. Let us consider from our text today a wicked oath/covenant that was sworn, which will leads us into what is a lawful and unlawful oath, vow, or covenant according to God’s Word. The main points in the sermon today are: (1) The Wicked Oath Sworn to Murder Paul (Acts 23:12-15); (2) The Application of Oaths, Vows, and Covenants to Our Lives.
