Elijah was just as much of a human being as we are, in fact part of the reason for verse 16 is to point out that this great prophet, this man who was so powerfully charged by God that it was prophesied that the forerunner for Christ would come in his power also had to deal with these same kind of things. Those four words “subject to like passions” that we see in verse 17 mean: suffering the like with another, of like feelings or affections, similarly affected. All of that is pointing to something very special for us, his life. With all that he lived through he was able to live for God which can give us some hope, help, and encouragement. Because this guy has his moments of failure too and he was able to get right back up again and follow his assignment and if he did then so can we.
