1. When? a. “The last days” (v. 1) refers to the time between the birth of Christ and His second coming again. (Acts 2:16-17; 1 Jn 2:18; 1 Cor 10:11). b. “Perilous times” are seasons or pocket of times which are in some ways difficult, dangerous, troublesome and hard to endure. c. Such times are likely to become more intense and more frequent as we head towards the Last Day (cf. 2 Tim 3:13). 2. Who? a. Paul is not referring to unbelievers in the world, but to professing believers for they have “a form of godliness, but deny the power thereof.” b. Eighteen characteristics describe these person. They shall be: (1) Lovers of their own selves; (2) covetous; (3) boasters; (4) proud; (5) blasphemers; (6) disobedient to parents; (7) unthankful; (8) unholy; (9) without natural affection; (10) trucebreakers; (11) false accusers; (12) incontinent; (13) fierce; (14) despisers of those that are good; (15) traitors; (16) heady; (17) highminded; (18) lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God. c. Paul is not calling us to examine ourselves, but since he is referring to professing believers, it behoves each of us to consider if Holy Spirit is describing something of us. 3. What? a. Paul want Timothy and all ministers “turn away” “from such” (v. 5). b. This is a difficult but necessary instruction for all ministers and really all of us. We must also be prepared to turn away from anyone who is clearly among those whom Paul is describing. c. Kind words and personal admonishment cannot change stony hearts which resist the truth (v. 8).
