The apostle Paul addresses two great topics in the first chapter of his letter to the churches meeting in Rome: first, the righteousness of God is revealed in the gospel (Romans 1:17), and second, the wrath of God is revealed from heaven (Romans 1:18). If we understand the holiness of God, it is easy to understand why His wrath is revealed, but we may not as easily comprehend how His wrath is revealed. Romans 1:24-32 explains the sobering truth that God's wrath is being revealed right now by His handing people over to their desire to sin. The Lord allows those who have rejected Him to pursue what they most want, and it leads to their ruin, including the practice of homosexuality and other deviant behaviors. In these verses, Paul explains three aspects of God's abandoning people to their sin: "God gave them over in the desires of their hearts to impurity" (verse 24); "God gave them over to degrading passions" (verse 26); and "God gave them over to a depraved mind" (verse 28).
What a hopeless picture of doom for all of us! But marvelously, "where sin increased, grace abounded all the more" (Romans 5:20) in the gospel, so that Paul could say to the Corinthians, "Such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God" (1 Corinthians 6:11). The gospel triumphs over our inclination to sin and wins us to our Savior!
