We have come to a major turning point in Luke’s gospel. The record of Jesus’ Galilean ministry is complete (4:14-9:50). Now He begins His journey to Jerusalem where He will fulfill the will of His father and redeem us (9:51-19:44). This is a very precious section which includes 21 parables, 18 of which (including the Good Samaritan and the Prodigal Son) are unique to Luke’s gospel (and well beloved).
This week’s passage reminds us of what it means for Jesus to walk the road the Father has set before Him and the nature of the commitment required from those who want to follow Him. Not all of those who are called are chosen.
We also will see yet another failure on the part of His chosen disciples who misunderstand the nature of Jesus’ mission when they desire to bring wrath upon the Samaritans when they fail to receive and welcome Jesus.
