Joseph is a type, a representation of Jesus. Joseph escaped death, Jesus died for our sins. Joseph was delivered from death, Jesus conquered death. Joseph was not perfect, he sinned. Jesus never sinned. Joseph's brothers carried guilt about how they treated Joseph. Judah offered himself in place of the others, Jesus is the Lion of Judah offering Himself. Joseph was not swayed by Judah's begging, but instead he did not want his father to suffer. Joseph wanted his brothers to know that God loves them and Joseph did not want his brothers to be distressed. God is sovereignly at work in every situation. He is working out His good for those who love Him and are called to according to His purpose. We do not always know how long the bad times will last. God knows exactly what He is doing. Israel, when he found out that Benjamin came back and Joseph was alive, went from sorrow to celebration. Even something evil that lasts for years can be turned to something good by God. If we will surrender our lives to Jesus, He will save us.
