Mary chose the better thing. Martha was consumed by the things around her, Mary was consumed with Jesus. Martha allowed the physical things around her to distract her from Jesus, and He was right there in the room! Actually, I am sure she saw herself as doing what she was doing FOR Jesus, but the first priority should always be to worship and adore Him. This is an easy mistake for us to make individually, and it is a classic mistake of the church. We get so focused on doing the stuff that we miss the reality of being centered on Jesus. Pretty soon it is just about doing the stuff. There was nothing wrong with what Martha was doing in and of itself, it just missed the point. The first priority is always the worship and adoration of the Lord. Gratitude to Him for what He has done. Everything else flows forth from that. When we get our eyes on him, we naturally get our eyes on others.
