At the end of Paul's prayer in Col 1:9-12 he asked that the Colossians might be joyfully thankful. This leads him to joyfully give "thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light."
In verses 13-14, then, Paul further exposits this wonderful inheritance in Christ we share by linking together our deliverance, transferral, and redemption in Christ.
In doing this, he is laying the foundation to combat the false teaching infiltrating the Colossian church: a clear understanding of our redemption and understanding and exaltation of our great Redeemer. As John Davenant wrote, "The best preservative against error is to hold aright the benefit of redemption; as also the sufficiency and efficacy of the Redeemer."
