Stephen concluded his rehearsal of Israel's history (and God's salvation history) by turning his accusers' charges back on their own heads. They had charged him with opposing Moses, the Law, and the holy place, and therefore God Himself. But the truth was that they were the ones guilty of those charges, for they failed to see how each of those features of Israel's history have found their fulfillment in Jesus of Nazareth. He is the One whom Moses, the Law, and the various expressions of the holy place all prefigured; it is in Him that they find their true meaning and sacred status. The accusers, not the accused, were the blasphemers precisely because they refused to believe God concerning those entities and their purpose in salvation history. And seeking to uphold and enforce their own false understanding, they were guilty of opposing the One they thought they served with a whole heart.
