In Mt. 6 the Lord Jesus is steering His followers away from hypocrisy. The subjects of the Kingdom of Heaven must be genuine in every area of life - especially in our spiritual exercises. Sadly, too many professing Christians engage in spiritual exercises with an aim toward impressing others. Christ is emphasizing in this chapter that our spiritual exercises must aim in the right direction which is a God-ward direction. This is true with giving - it's true with prayer - and it's true with fasting. In this study we look at the second of these 3 spiritual exercises - the practice of prayer. Verses 6 & 7 set the stage for what we commonly refer to as 'The Lord's prayer.' It's good, therefore, to consider the setting for that prayer before we study the contents of that prayer.
