Crises of human leadership are not extraordinary in this world. They are normal. Some are greater than others, but our routine experience is to either put our confidence in human leaders or be dismayed by their failures. So Psalm 99 can help us navigate the difficult waters of living under the oversight of fallen people. In every situation we must affirm that God is King, know what that means, and act accordingly. If a parent fails us we will not conclude that God has failed us. If our preferred politician wins an important race Psalm 99 will check us against exaggerating the importance of the win. If that politician loses we will not believe that all is lost. This is not to minimize the importance of good human leadership. Parental leadership matters. So do presidents. But the rule of God matters more. And we mustn't lose sight of that. Psalm 99 interweaves what we must know about God and what we must do with that knowledge.
