Today I will begin our expository study of the prophecy of Isaiah. Since this preaching series will occupy our attention for the foreseeable future, I would encourage you to do some reading in Isaiah and the other prophets (both biblical and extra-biblical). However, before we actually get to the text of Isaiah, I want you to begin to think about the prophet and his unique role in the redemption of God. Therefore, in the sermon today I will develop what God has revealed about the identity, the method, the function, and the urgency of the prophet of God. In doing so we will consider the call of the prophet, and then we will examine his method as a seer and a speaker. But one of the main thrusts of this sermon will be the emphasis upon the prophet in his role as the prosecuting attorney on behalf of God. The Lord has a legal case against His people because they have violated the terms of the covenant. So he sends forth His prophet to prosecute His case. We will never really understand or appreciate the prophet himself, or his appointed task, if we fail to grasp this important aspect of his work. My prayer is that God will be pleased to bless His holy word for the profit of His people as we begin this series!
