The Arminians argue that man is not so dead spiritually (totally depraved) that he cannot understand or respond to the gospel. The Calvinists argue that man is dead in sins, and thus can neither understand nor respond to the gospel without first having been regenerated. Both theological systems presume that one must have some degree of spiritual life in order to hear & respond to the voice of Jesus. But, Jesus directly contradicts the assertions of both systems: He speaks to the dead, and His voice is so powerful that when He speaks, even the dead can hear!
