Today we will continue our discussion about Profane Preaching specifically and about The Christian and Cursing generally. As we have been researching this issue, I can't believe the comments that I have read that seek to justify foul language in the mouth of Christians.
It seems that we find ourselves part of a generation desensitized to the use of profane words and crude, vulgar illustrations (not just in the pews but from the pulpits, as well).
Profane is defined as: Something characterized by irreverence or contempt for God; Not devoted to holy purposes; Heathen, pagan, common or vulgar; the misuse of anything that should be held in reverence or respect; To defile, debase to employ unworthily. The root word literally means 'something outside of the temple'. Synonyms include: blasphemous, sacrilegious, ungodly, etc.
Is this really the type of language that we would want associated with preaching the Gospel? Is this really the type of 'sound speech' that should characterize the Christian?
Most of the discussion on this issue that I have reviewed centers on people's opinion. But there is no need to default to speculation. The Bible, while not mentioning a specific list of unacceptable words, is not silent on this issue. Today we will look at what the Bible has to say about the un-holy habit of cursing.
