In 1 Thessalonians 2:1-12, Paul explains 4 characteristics of his, Sylvanus', and Timothy's preaching and ministry among the Thessalonians. I. Their ministry was fruitful (v. 1). II. Their preaching was bold in the midst of suffering and conflict (v. 2). III. Their preaching was from proper motives. A. Not from error (v. 3a), because God approved them and entrusted them with the gospel (v. 4a). B. Not from impurity (v. 3b), because God examined their hearts (v. 4c). C. Not from deceitfulness (v. 3c), because they spoke to please God, not men (v. 4b).
IV. Their ministry was pleasing to God (v. 4b). A. Because it was not: 1. Based on flattering speech (v. 5a). 2. Motivated by greed (v. 5b). 3. Seeking glory from men (v. 6). B. Because it was: 1. Like a nursing mother with her babies. a. Gentle (v. 7a). b. Caring (v. 7b). c. Affectionate (v. 8a, c). d. Selfless (v. 8b). 2. Like a father with his children. a. Working to provide (v. 9). b. Walking as a model (v. 10). c. Witnessing toward maturity (vs. 11-12).
