In our world, we tend to look at those who are wealthy, who have money to burn as the fortunate or blessed one! And those who are poor, who are destitute, who lack the means of providing a comfortable life, we think of them as the unfortunate ones in life! But Jesus turns it around. The blessed ones or the fortunate ones, according to Jesus, are the poor in spirit. They realize their spiritual destitution and are trusting in Jesus Christ for their salvation. And though they might be poor materially, they are rich toward God. To them has been promised the kingdom of God. But those who are rich materially, but poor before God, are the unfortunate ones for whatever pleasure their money brings them today is all they get! They have sacrificed the eternal on the altar of the immediate. Their riches insulate them from the realities of life that draw us to Christ. They are to ones to be most pitied in this world.
