God's purposes and will shall be accomplished, and neither our abilities nor our failures will in any way derail them!
The truth of that was pointed out by an automobile accident the preacher was involved in just three days ago. Becoming distracted at night, he lost control of his car and spun out off the road, but the Lord preserved him without injury.
Even though we may be incompetent or careless, God accomplishes His purposes for good for His people, praise God! He will not permit our failures and incompetence to thwart what He has determined to do.
This sometimes causes us to presume upon God's sovereignty. We think that if God will accomplish His will, then we are free to do what we like, and so we justify our laziness, carelessness, indolence, disobedience and apathy.
But God's Word, while upholding His sovereignty, nevertheless exhorts us to obedience, industry, alertness, kindness, praise, and holiness. We are never to use God's sovereignty and the certainty of His will being accomplished to justify any sin or negligence on our part.
The devil tempted our Lord Jesus to presume upon God's purposes when he urged Him to jump off the temple heights because God would preserve Him no matter what He did.
Satan's logic was simple: if it is true that you are Messiah, then nothing can overthrow God's will that you reign as king. Therefore, you can do anything reckless you like and God will sustain you, because He must do so to accomplish His promises and purposes!
Jesus rightly rebuked Satan for proposing that He tempt God. Thinking that God's sovereignty is an excuse to justify our disobedience or laziness or recklessness is a satanic lie.
