In these two verses Christ is presented as the "champion" of his people--champion in the original sense of one that fights for another's rights and honor. Christ has undertaken to put all enemies under his feet. What are these enemies? They are Satan, guilt, our corruption, instruments of Satan such as exceedingly great and powerful monarchies and ungodly movements; and death, the last ememy. Christ took on these enemies in three stages: 1) By entering the arena of the world as a man; 2) In his resurrection and ascension; and 3) From his throne in heaven, where he rules now as a king--"in ruling and defending us, and in restraining and conquering all his and our enemies" (Shorter Catechism Q. 26). The believer has fierce conflicts, but he is never alone and Jesus will win.
