Far too often when considering spiritual gifts, Christians focus on personal edification and pride in the gift they have (or think that they have), but that is the opposite of the message of the New Testament on the gifts of the Holy Spirit. The Scriptures tell us that we are given gifts in order to serve and bless others, just as Jesus said "For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many" (Mark 10:45).
Peter exhorts us to put the gift that we have received to work – "employ it in serving one another" (1 Peter 4:10). In fact, the word translated by the phrase "employ in serving" shares the same root as our word "deacon", so we could somewhat awkwardly translate it "deaconing" one another. Every believer should think of themselves as a servant of every other believer, particularly in the context of their local church. That calls for all our creativity and Holy Spirit-inspired imagination.
