The brothers are on their way home, elated that they seem to have fulfilled their mission. They have bulging bags of grain, Simeon, and most importantly, Benjamin. Just beyond the city limits, however, they are overtaken by the steward. Following Joseph's carefully prepared script, the steward accuses them of rewarding evil for good by stealing the Prime Minister's silver goblet. The brothers vehemently deny the accusation, but the cup is found in Benjamin's sack. They have just entered Joseph's final test. They have a clear choice: abandon their brother like they had done to Joseph or stand with him. For the first time in the story, they do the right thing. They tear their clothes and return to Egypt.
Here's the crucial question: is the brother's change of heart genuine? They rent their clothes, but is it only because they have let down their father—that they have failed in their mission? They are returning to Egypt, but is it only because they are under arrest? Is it worldly sorrow, or is it true repentance?
