To be bounded by God's divine, sovereign grace, puts us in a place completely different from anything before.
1. Many in the Church do not understand the work of salvation by the means of (sovereign) grace. (The Problem)
For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. (v. 29) [Para. 1] Hence those, who foolishly draw this inference--that God has elected none but those whom he foresaw worthy of his grace… As though everyone had been elected on account of his merit; but [reminds] them of the eternal counsel of God, he wholly deprives them of all unworthiness. ~ John Calvin [CRF. Exodus 33:12-16; ESV]
2. The work of salvation is by God's sovereign initiation leading to the imputation of grace. (The Correction)
a. Salvation is by God's own initiative – And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified. (v. 30) [CRF. 2 Timothy 1:8-10; ESV] b. If God has done this work within our hearts, who can say or do otherwise? What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? [If God has so moved, who can say different?] (v. 31) 3. We MUST understand that this salvation is not simply religious but transformative. (The Follow-Through) [para. 2] He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? (v. 32) [CRF. I John 4:4-6; ESV] [para. 4]
