The picture being painted here in our text is one of hope and encouragement. Ezra as he is writing here to encourage the returning exiles is also speaking to us today. The exiles were returning to a city that was destroyed but still a place of promise. Most were born in Babylon and had never known what Jerusalem should have looked like. Our Christian lives are the same way, we were not born in heaven and this world has been destroyed from what it once was. But still there is promise here for us, what we have to do though is conquer and receive. Ezra, while writing here shows us some giants that stand in our way. Not all giants are ten feet tall; some are giants simply because they have a population or numbers on their side. God however has empowered us and stands with to face them and thus one plus God is a majority no matter how many the enemy has. The giant of the power of wealth looms large but whether as dollar signs or bills we need to turn the problem over to God and let Him bear the burden. The giant of the past is a shadow that requires us to remember it is the past and satan's future is the lake of fire while ours is heaven. Parasites are a giant that tries to steal our lives; we must call on our heavenly to help us get them off. While the giant of portions intends to fill our time up with the little things instead of the Bible. We can win because we are empowered by Jesus to win these battles.
