In this final discourse, our Lord has described the relationship of the believer to the Lord Himself and to God the Father. Then he described the relationship of believers, one to another. Now, in this passage, our Lord details the relationship of the believer to the world. This relationship is often one of animosity and opposition from the world. Our Lord is preparing his disciples, including those of us today, for this persecution.
Pastor Linehan describes the reality of worldly opposition and the reasons for it. But the Christian also has reason for encouragement in the midst of this opposition. Christians are not left alone to face persecution. We are given the Holy Spirit. He is called the Spirit of comfort and truth. He comforts us, teaches us and strengthens us to face this opposition.
