Peter is addressing the Jewish believers who were forced to flee Jerusalem, when a great persecution began on the day that Stephen was stoned to death. After stating the wonderful things that the believer has been given in Christ, we now see that these things are the foundation for our rejoicing in the Lord always, even when we are experiencing the various trials of living as believers in a hostile world. God's word speaks of the glories to follow, and here we look at how an understanding of living in the time of the glories to follow is to shape our lives for the rest of our days here on earth. As members of the family of God, we are to be obedient to the holy standards of our new family. Jesus Christ is the cornerstone of the building where God has made us living stones, and has, in Christ, made us to be priests. Here we look at the prophecies concerning His rejection by men and His becoming the cornerstone by His resurrection from the dead. But to those who reject Him as their cornerstone, He becomes their stumbling stone and their rock of offense. They stumble over Him because they are disobedient to the word of God. But to those who are saved through faith in Him and His finished work, He has caused us to be a chosen race, a royal priesthood and a holy nation. Here we look at what God has done to make us forever holy in His sight.
