During the 16th century, the formative principle of the Reformation was Sola Scriptura, the belief that Scripture alone is the Word of God and, therefore, the final voice of authority in matters of faith and practice. In that day, the principle of Sola Scripture had been displaced by Sola Traditio (church tradition as the final authority), if not in name, certainly in practice. In the evangelical church today, Sola Scriptura has been displaced by what we might call, Sola Sensus. Personal experience, feelings, thoughts and opinions have become the new "standard of truth" with far reaching implications for the church.
