The Gospel According To John October 10, 2010 Sermon Lesson 8 John 1:43-51
CHRIST'S DIVINE CALL TO DISCIPLESHIP
Because Christ divinely calls disciples to Himself, we must follow Him!
In the case of Philip (43-44)
He finds Philip (43a) He calls Philip (43b-44) Philip follows Him!
In the case of Nathanael (45-46)
Philip calls Nathanael (45-46) An intentional witness to a friend (45a) An imperfect witness of the facts (45b) A persistent witness in the face of unbelief (46)
He personally engages Nathanael (46-50) He “sees” Nathanael for who he is (47-48) His lack of deceit (47) Apparently , his meditation on Scripture (48) He receives Nathanael's worship (49) For His authority as a teacher—“Rabbi” For His deity—“Son of God” For His kingship—“King of Israel” He promises to show Nathanael “greater things than these” (50)
Nathanael believes and follows Him!
In the case of all the disciples (51)
He promises to show them an open heaven (51a) He promises to show them His divine power (51b) They follow Him!
