This passage is a spiritual alarm clock. Too many Christian people spend much of their life sleep walking: "Wherefore He says awake thou that sleeps, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light" (Ephesians 5:14). The symbols of sleep and death apply to the same persons--sleep and death are alike in that the sleeper and the corpse are both unconscious of the external world. Deep unawareness is the point. Where Romans 13:12 says "the night is far spent" it means the time granted to the present world order to continue its life without God. "The night" began in Genesis 3 with the fall. The fall brought night--darkness. The night is far spent means a new order is coming. The implications are of stupendous significance. This simple message is divided in three main points: NEARNESS, EARNESTNESS, READINESS.
