For 35 years, Asa was faithful and depended on the Lord. He reformed Israel and God blessed him. But he did not end well. An overview of Asa's Change — A Contrast to his earlier faithfulness The thirty-sixth year changed everything (16:1). We are not told what defections occurred before this but we recognize something had changed by the decisions he made, by his reactions, by his actions. His RELIANCE changed. His COVENANT changed. His RESPONSE to GOD's WORD changed. His DEVOTION and OFFERINGS changed. His RELATIONSHIP to GOD's PEOPLE changed. AS A RESULT, his overall life changed: PEACE to WAR The Overall Lesson: 35 years of faithfulness does not guarantee that we will finish the rest of our lives well. Asa's last five years are recounted in ch. 16 and what a spiritual disaster they became. Listen to Ezek. 18:24, "But when a righteous person turns away from his righteousness and does injustice and does the same abominations that the wicked person does, shall he live? None of the righteous deeds that he has done shall be remembered; for the treachery of which he is guilty and the sin he has committed, for them he shall die." 1.
