This sermon intends to elucidate the biblical significance of Jerusalem.
Ryan starts in Genesis 1-3, in Eden, where unfallen man had communion & personal fellowship w/ his God.
After Adam's sin, he is 'exiled' out of the presence of God, i.e. the "promised land", a picture or representation of man's spiritual death (cast forth from God's presence of blessing).
Ever since, God has been moving history along to restore this broken relationship between Him & His creation which was brought about by man's sin.
In Genesis 3, God brought about a temporary reconciliation by 'clothing' Adam & Eve's nakedness, obviously alluding to the necessity of a blood sacrifice for sinful humanity to enter into God's holy presence.
Ryan then develops the massive motif of the Promised Land (especially as seen in Exodus through Joshua), which culminates when David brings about "rest" in the "promised land" and sets up God's throne (the ark) in Jerusalem, the city of Israel's King.
Of course, this is all but a type of the coming of Jesus Christ & His sending forth from His side the "promised Holy Spirit", the true "inheritance" of God's elect people.
Not only is this sermon an overview, or biblical theology of the importance of "land" (Hebrew: eretz) & the "temple" and "Jerusalem" in God's redemptive plan to save His people, but it has many imnportant practical applications for believers in the New Covenant era.
