Isaac and Rebekah had two sons. One was a profane man who despised his heritage, his birthright, and the things of God. He esteemed them of little or no value - at least not as important as a bowl of beans when his stomach was empty. The other son was the one chosen by God to inherit the promises of God and the covenant of Abraham. God did not chose Jacob for what he was, but what he was going to become. Jacob lengthened his long, hard life and trials by continuing to put his own hand to things and "help" the Providence of God to work out like it was supposed to. We need to understand Jacob because most of us have a lot of his character in us.
