And we saw that the LORD's anointed must be brought through suffering to glory. The only way for a son of Adam to become the son of God is the way of the cross. And even as Israel was tested in the wilderness, in order to learn to trust in the LORD, so also David must be tested in the wilderness.
And that won't happen as long as David is getting comfy as the great warrior, the king's son-in-law.
And so God sends the evil spirit to Saul in order to drive David into the wilderness...
