In Genesis God emphasized His choices over man's tradition of the firstborn; however, in Exodus the emphasis has changed. Now God is emphasizing the importance of the firstborn in order to teach man that redemption from God requires that God's firstborn is the only adequate sacrifice for sin. This was a hard lesson for Moses and an even harder lesson for his wife who was raised in a different tradition.
