We start a short Advent series tracing the names of Jesus as given in Isaiah 9:6, taking one name each Sunday leading up to Christmas Day. When we look at the Wonderful Counselor, we see one who is so much more than a pleasant friend to talk to. The word wonderful in this use in Isaiah is a strong word of great gravity, He is full of wonder, in fact, He is the wonder of wonders, there is nothing more astounding than the Eternal Son of God, becoming flesh even as a helpless baby. His birth is a wonder, but the redemption to life with the Father is the greatest miracle. The counselor in the old testament times was often the king leading the people, he was to be the intercessor for God to the people and the people to God and to guide the people in the ways of God or was supposed to. Christ the Eternal Son, with the Father from the beginning, has the whole purpose of God and this He not only makes known but he lives this out subjecting Himself to the all objection and rejection of the religious leaders to bring believers to and through Himself to the Father.
