INTRODUCTION: The time for which Joseph longed finally came. This chapter shows that he was exalted as the second in command in Egypt. He had been given dreams concerning this moment years earlier, but had little understanding of the tribulations that would precede and enable its fulfillment. According to the word of the Lord, the troubles were sent to try Joseph (Psalm 105:19). It is true that suffering always precedes glory!
4. Dreams are found in the Old Testament and the Gospels up until the time of Jesus’ crucifixion. a. Pilate’s wife has the last recorded dream in the Bible (Matthew 27:19). b. There is no record of God speaking to any man in a dream during the church age. The church does not need dreams and interpretations because it has a “more sure word of prophecy” (2 Peter 1:19). c. The book of Jude mentions “filthy dreamers” (Jude 1:8) d. Yet, Israel’s last days will be marked by a resurgence of old men dreaming dreams (Acts 2:17).
Summary: Joseph has been imprisoned, falsely accused, with a mock trial. In positions of authority, he still shows himself as a servant. He is in prison guiltless. Then Joseph is raised up out of the prison and placed upon a throne sitting on the right hand of the king of Egypt, yet he is still dead to his brethren. He turns out to be a wonderful counselor with the government on his shoulder exalted over all except for the first throne. Joseph is given all power, all authority, all dominion. If anyone wants to live they must come to Joseph for sustenance. All those in his presence must bow the knee before him at the foot of his throne or they will die without him.
