Unlike us, the Bible never glosses over the faults of its heroes. We read the inspired and infallible biographies of their lives and see not only their virtues, but also their vices. The text before us is a case in point. We first see a clear demonstration of Abram's faith, but then we are shown a period in his life where he did not trust the Lord with his own heart, but instead relied upon his own understanding. But such windows into the lives of the saints are meant to be an encouragement and warning to us! Like Abram, we too have much unbelief left in our believing hearts. It has been well said that there are no big men, just small men who serve a very big God. If God's grace was sufficient for Abram, then it is sufficient for us as well!
