Leaders worthy to be followed understand the shortness of their own lives and fragility of passing the mantle of leadership onto the next generation of leaders. Leaders are not born. Leaders are created through careful and meticulous discipleship. We can never expect the next generation to be any more successful in this endeavor than would we are in our attempts at making disciples of Jesus.
Mediocrity breeds ever increasing mediocrity and a decreasing Christianity. Doctrinal shallowness can never be something leaders worthy to being followed can ever tolerate. Yet, laziness is inherent to every student who does not understand what is involved in passing the mantle to the next generation. No one can pass the mantle that they have not been diligently and studiously involved in gaining. Therefore, Paul exhorts Timothy in II Timothy 2:15; "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."
Militancy and diligency are the left and right hands of leadership worthy to be followed. No one should ever expect anyone to give credibility to a kind of Christianity that is mediocre in the study of God's Word or in living God's Word without passion and zeal for souls and good works (Ephesians 2:10). There is a presumption in Biblical leadership that leading has a destiny which is Christlikeness and there is only one pathway to that destiny (Romans 6:11-13) -TOTAL SURRENDER!
