The eighth of the ten commandments is given to protect private property. I love my neighbor by respecting and safeguarding their personal possessions. The PRECEPT from God here is "You shall not steal". When examined it means to take by stealth - appropriating without permission, dishonestly or unlawfully. It can be explained in a variety of ways (Exodus 22), but must always be repaid with generous restitution. The POINT made in Scripture requires a total life-change - the thief's custom of stealing must change as they obey the command to "steal no longer". All thieves are to make restitution - following the command to "labor...with their own hands" and correcting their lifestyle by "performing what is good." The reason for this is so that they will have an abundance to share, being able to allocate to him who has need.
