Redemption is the main theme of the Bible. God's primary role as He relates to a fallen humanity is that of "Redeemer." Sin has come between God and man and we can do noting on our own to reconcile the situation. The problem is the very real guilt (not just a feeling) of our sinful condition. The solution is the "covering" provided by God. John R.W. Stott puts it this way, "Christianity is a rescue religion. It declares that God has taken the initiative in Jesus Christ to deliver us from our sins." In other words, we are saved by the redemptive work of God in Jesus Christ.
