Genres: Law, Prophets, Writings II. Its people – Monotheists, Farmers, Villagers, Patriarchal, Clothing, Diet III. Its themes – In the Old Testament we find – 1. A loving, holy God who created all things wants to enter into a covenant with His people 2. God giving His people law, commands, statues so that they can live in a way that pleases Him. 3. The Prophets of God calling the people of God back to Himself every time they strayed from Him. 4. God provides forgiving for His people through bloody sacrifice (substitutionary punishment) 5. The Promised Messiah who would come to save His people. IV. Its importance – 1. All in the New Testament rests upon the Old Testament. 2. Without it we could not make any sense of the many (350+) Old Testament references found in the New Testament. 3. It contains multiple examples that we can learn from. Romans 15:4 4. It set forth vitally important doctrines pertaining to our lives. 5. It contains many prophecies concerning Jesus Christ. V. Its application – We need to study and meditate upon the Old Testament every day.
