On the night of his betrayal, Jesus warned Peter that Satan had asked for and obtained permission to test the faith of the Apostles, and that he would be 'sifted like wheat' to see if he was true grain or chaff that would blow away with the wind. Nevertheless, Peter maintained that even if everyone else left Christ, he never would. How many times since then have Christians made grand claims about the strength of their faith, or their willingness to endure even persecution for Christ's sake instead of taking the bible's warnings to heart and 'watching and praying' instead of trusting in their own strength? How many times have we been 'spiritually cocky' and found our faith to be weak and wanting in the time of testing? What should we do when that is the case, and how can even our spiritual failures be used by God for the good of the church?
