sWhat is grace? Perhaps you've heard of the acrostic, "God's riches at Christ's Expense". There is a lot of truth in that definition. But that definition can be a bit misleading, because many times people treat grace as if it is a thing. And we imagine that if grace is a thing, then grace is a quantitative thing so we need more and more of it. Another common definition of grace is that it is "unmerited favor". God's grace is not merely unmerited favor. It is ill-merited favor. Not only do we not deserve to have God look upon us with mercy, we deserve to have God look upon us with wrath and vengeance because of our sin. In our text there are three principles of grace. The first principle is that grace is often very subtle, and we don't see it until it is revealed to us. Secondly, grace gives confidence in God's promises. Finally, God's grace is not contingent upon our sinlessness, but is in fact in spite of our sinfulness. His grace is persistent.
