The ark was a real vessel created to God's specifications, and the purpose was to deliver Noah and his family and certain of the animals out of the devastation of a global cataclysmic Flood sent to destroy life on earth, as a judgment for the wickedness of humanity.
The ark dimensions were incredibly stable, unlike the silly cubic structure mentioned in the Epic of Gilgamesh. And the created kinds were not at the level of species we know today. It probably would have needed only somewhere between 2,000 - 16,000 animals, which would have easily fit on an ark that size.
Noah obeyed God, and he and his family were delivered.
