'As the apostle says to Timothy, so also he says to everyone, 'Give yourself to reading.' He who will not use the thoughts of other men's brains proves that he has no brains of his own. You need to read. Renounce as much as you will all light literature, but study as much as possible sound theological works, especially the Puritanic writers, and expositions of the Bible. The best way for you to spend your leisure is to be either reading or praying.'

A most exceptional series of messages I had a little background to the marrow men and the marrow controversy previously, however, these lectures have been most informative and interesting. Just one question- Was the Auchterarder creed in and of itself right or wrong?? I fully agree with the marrow men's emphasise and direction against the legalistic flow, but I cannot fully reconcile the de-emphasis upon the doctrine of repentance in salvation, although agreeing with the fundamental truth of faith in it's operation apprehending Christ in His person and work, with my own studies and investigations. For example, such men as R.L. Dabney proposed a pre-eminence on repentance, not to mention others. Therefore to say man does not forsake sin in the first actings of faith, even although faith in its operation as the appropriating organ is the instrument alone of justification by God's grace, could be presenting a erroneous and mercenary view of man's activity in the inception of his salvation. (It is so difficult to write in these small boxes with reasonable style, and present with accuracy of flow and thought!!)
