Here, in this passage, Jesus denounces cities that have been given great miracles. Even though Jesus did these miracles, they did not repent. Repentance is a change of mind, that leads to a change in direction. Apart from Jesus Christ, no-one will stand in the judgment. When we continue in sin when God has graciously called us to repentance, judgment will come and we will not find hope. If our attitude is that we feel we are going to help God out, we are not in God’s family. We need mercy from God. Does God have the right to hide the truth from some people? Does He have a right to destroy all His creation? Yes, He decides what is right and what is wrong. The amazing thing is that God has decided to save some of His creation. God saves people who are hopeless. God chooses the unlikely. God does save smart people and people of nobility, but none of them believe that they are saved by their own merit. It is God’s choice to save those whom He chooses to save. Jesus invites anyone who would like to come. However, if our response to His invitation is to say, no, then we should not be surprised that we are headed for Hell. We should believe all of scripture, we can not get closer to the truth than that. We need to be yoked with Jesus, and He takes the lead.
